The National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec) has developed an Intelligent Network Management System (INMS) which is based on open source technology and plans to offer it as freeware in October. The INMS could help schools, academic institutes, SMEs, Internet cafe{aac}s and general users, allowing them to monitor and manage their networks and save on the cost of software licences, according to Nectec researcher Dr Panita Pongpaibool.
She said the INMS comprised three major systems _ a network monitoring system, a traffic measurement and analysis system and a bandwidth management system.
The network monitoring system has been developed using Nagios, a open source host and service monitor designed to flag network problems that has a graphical user interface, an automatic topology display, history and status reports, a status report based on services and equipment and an SQL database.
Nagios could monitor and analyse the network status and also alert the system administrator by SMS or by email should anything be found wrong with the equipment, she said.
The traffic measurement and analysis system has been developed on NTop, the open source protocol analysis and traffic flow tool.
