DTAC set to upgrade to 3G without a partner
The second-ranked mobile operator DTAC has reiterated its intention to go it alone in upgrading its 2G network to third-generation (3G) without a joint venture with its concession provider CAT Telecom.
The comment came in response to rumours that DTAC would allow CAT to take a 25% stake in the company in exchange for a concession conversion.
But DTAC said in a statement that the report was a mere rumour.
CEO Sigve Brekke affirmed that the company would convert to high-speed download packet access (HSDPA) under a five-billion baht plan.
"Now, we are just waiting for approval from CAT on the upgrading," he said.
"We are forced to speed up our 3G plans as we dont' want to be late."
Mr Brekke said the decision was based on the fact that the company's legacy 850 MHz bandwidth could be quickly turned to high-speed, third-generation mobile broadband services with a lower investment cost compared to the 900 MHz of AIS.
